India’s 75th Independence Day

History:
August 15th 1947 is marked as Independence Day for India as we were freed from the British and it
was also the anniversary of the partition of India and Pakistan.
British rule in India began in 1757 following the victory Battle of Plassey. The East India company, an
English company began exercising its power in India for 100 years. The independence movement
began in India during World War 1 led by M.K Ghandhi by his idea of satyagrah or non violence
Theme:
India will be completing 75 years of Independence this year and to celebrate of these 75 years of
independence, the government has come up with an initiative called Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The official journey of this Mahotsav commenced on 12th March 2021 and from then began the 75-
week countdown which will end on August 15, 2023.
There are 5 themes in this Mahotsav namely:
1) Freedom Struggle:
This is the foundation of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. It’s main goal is to revive the stories of
unsung revolutionaries who helped India achieve their freedom.
The events being held under this theme includes:
Birsa Munda Jayanti, Declaration of Provisional Government of Free India by Netaji, etc

2) Ideas@75
This theme focuses on programs and events inspired by ideas and ideals that have shaped

us and will guide us as we navigate through this period of Amrit Kaal (25 years between
India@75 and India@100).
These include events and initiatives such as Kashi Utsav dedicated to Hindi literary luminaries
from the land of Kashi, Post Cards to Prime Minister wherein more than 75 lakh children are
writing their vision of India in 2047 and their impressions of unsung heroes of India’s freedom
struggle.

3) Resolve@75
With a vision to help India become a developed country by 2047, this program focusses on
the resolves on ideas required to do so. Only when a number of well educated and citizens
with a good aim come together to come up with resolutions will those ideas come under
action.
Events and programs under this theme include initiatives such as Constitution Day, Good
Governance Week etc. that help bring alive our commitment towards the ‘PLANET AND
PEOPLE’ while being driven by a deep sense of PURPOSE.

4) Actions@75
This theme focuses on all the efforts that are being undertaken to help India take its rightful
position. It is driven by Prime Minister Modi’s demand of SABKA SAATH. SABKA VIKAS.
SABKA VISHWAS, SABKA PRAYAS.

5) Achievements@75
It is intended to grow into a public account of our collective achievements as a 75-year-old
independent country with a legacy of 5000+ years of ancient history.

Flag hoisting, parade, fireworks, singing patriotic songs and our National Anthem, speech by the
Prime Minister of India and President of India will be commemorated this year
Why was 15th August 1947 chosen as the date?
Because it was the second anniversary of Japan’s surrender.
Japanese Emperor Hirohito gave a recorded radio address for this day. In the radio address, he
announced the surrender of Japan to the Allies.
The Indian Independence Bill gave August 15 as the date of independence for both countries
