Conference of Parties:COP27

The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC is commonly referred to as COP27 .It is the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference being held from 6th to 18th November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh,Egypt.

It will feature 200 members of the convention debating on next year’s carbon emission goals, energy planning and relief funding for developing countries struggling to meet climate goals.

The report published by UN Climate change Convention ahead of COP27 shows that whilst countries are bending the curve of global greenhouse gas emissions downward. Efforts remain insufficient to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degree celcius by the end of the century.

Four targets of the conference:

Mitigation, Adaptation, Finance, Collaboration.

Five key areas to watch at conference:

Water ,Food ,Nature , Industries, Decarbonisation, Climate Change Adaptation.

India has sought clarity and definition on climate finance besides motivating other countries to provide tecnology to combat climate and disasters.

Since COP agreements are non-binding on the signatory member states, the meeting also serves as a forum public display. However they also act as an effective ridge. Discussion is focused on Cooperation and facilitation not liability or compensation.

The conference aims to create an institutionally stable space for discussion on the pressing issues of climate change. It is important to put an end to the toxic ways of companies. They cannot claim to net zero if they invest in new fossil fuel causing deforestation or offset emissions .

The essential point is to ensure that all countries contribute to paying for what it takes to avoid the consequences of global warming without compromising on economic development while accounting for their historic responsibility to exacerbating the crisis.

Clearly we can curb the issue of global warming by adapting more ambitious pledges and Decarbonise faster.

While the world is distracted by Russia’s war in Ukraine, rampant inflation and economic recession, in the words of UN secretary the countries face a stark choice- “work together now to cut emissions or be condemned future generations.”
